At all of my customers only users with Domain Admin rights have acquired XP Pro desktops and using Arev 3.12 on a Win2K server with a HP LaserJet on a IP address. They can all successfully do a "net use lpt1 \\server\printershare" and Arev prints OK.

One site has now bought a number of XP Pro desktops for users who have only "User" rights. When I submit that same "net use" command as above I get a prompt "Enter the user name for 'server':

Regardless of what username and password I enter, regardless of their rights (even administrator) I get a failure message "System error 5 has occured 'Access is denied'". And, the lpt1 is not assigned.

I know this is some permissions problem but I'm unable to figure out where. I even tried giving that user Printer Admin rights to no success.

Suggestions?????

Thanks, Dave

Check the TEMP= path environment setting points to a real path to which there are sufficient privileges. Also check your shortcuts enable printing in background for the application (ie. not exclusive in foreground). Check the user has access privileges to the device.

net use lpt1: /d

net use lpt1: \\10.0.0.2\printershare /persistent:YES

or

net use lpt1: /d

net use lpt1: \\servername\printershare /persistent:YES

"Note that in Windows XP, non-administrative users cannot map an LPT port to a network printer path when the LPT port exists on the computer as a physical parallel port." from Microsoft support http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314499

So, I went to the BIOS settings and Disabled the Parallel port.

Then, the NET USE LPT1: \\server\printer

works. Ha!
