We did actually get called in to investigate a case of that ages ago. The disgruntled former employee has installed an MFS that encrypted the data as it was read from disk and wrote it back encrypted, decrypting on subsequent displays. After three months it deinstalled itself and so the client was left displaying apparently corrupted data.

Rather clever we thought at the time. Albeit illegal.
