Has anyone attempted to run multiple instances of Arev using Virtual PC or VMware? Does it affect record locking? We have several pc's that run batch processes and want to combine them into one server that has several virtual machines running.

I started with AREV under PC-MOS and progressed to Citrix Multiuser. I currently support many MU sites. Performance on a multiuser system is impressive. NOT! For batch processes, it would be much better to arrange the tasks to use a scheduler and run them in a single session on one dedicated PC. I have a scheduler in AREV which will execute processes (like VOC items) according to dates, times, and intervals.

One site I support has two dedicated indexers running in virtual workstations using VMware. The computer hosting VMware supports additional workstations for other applications. Performance varies depending on the resources and memory allocated.

We run VMWare on some machines and there are some minor issues, but it's all down to the amount of resources the VM itself is using. Once it's running, locking works fine.

Do you have specifics on what resources each VM instance should have?

On the Windows 3.1, we have 16M allocated to the VM.

For the purposes of this exercise though, all you're really doing is loading a VM so that the OS will run and then be able to allocate 4M EMS to ARev. 16M is fine for Windows 3.1. I'll load up 32M for Win95 and 98. If you can find DOS disks and the correct network drivers, then you can probably get away with 6M. The real problem is finding the TCP drivers, which is why I went for the Win31.
