Question about ARev32 (OpenInsight 32-bit Specific)

To all those that remember me, long time no talk and it's good to be back.
So, I just downloaded the OI8 demo. My main reason for this is to see if I can drag our existing ARev 3.02 application kicking & screaming into the Windows world. BTW, it's HR-1 from Ceridian.
OI8 is installed, and RevCmd is installed and configured. It appears to be working correctly as I can launch the STANDALONE form or use the RevCmd program and log into Sysprog. However, if I try to create a new application, I get an error that the new application list does not exist.
Also, I tried running the AREV_TO_AREV32 command from within OI, and a form comes up, but it won't let me enter any data. I'm not sure if this is disabled by design in the demo version or not.
Does anyone know if I can test AREV32 on my existing app using the demo version?

Regretfully can't answer about the demo version as not played with it yet. I am sitting here playing with AREV32 though and there are some hurdles to leap to get there - but you CAN get there if you have the application source.
Anyhow welcome back and THANK YOU for the introduction to 3 Dead Trolls in a Baggie!

You are quite welcome WRT 3DT. I figured you would enjoy it.
I do have access to source code (or at least, most of it), but how do I get the convert routine to run? Am I barking up the wrong tree with the AREV_TO_AREV32 utility?

There should be an AREV32_CONVERSION_WIZARD or something to that effect. That's the place to start.
Create the Application in OI. Start that Application in OI. EXEC the conversion wizard form.

You may not be able to run Arev32 in the demo because it needs a multiuser developers license to run.

Thanks for the feedback. I finally found the documentation (Thanks Mike!!!) and have been able to get the wizard started.
Of course, now I've run into another snag. HR-1 has some custom MFS's that don't exist in OI, so it won't convert those tables.
I'm going to try removing the MFS's just to see if I can get the tables to copy. Unfortunately, a large portion of the functionality in HR-1 is driven by these guys, so if they won't convert I'm pretty much stuck.

as long as you have the source to the mfs's you should not have any problems. They are the 'same' source wise.
Welcome back

And therein lies the issue. At least one of the MFS's (auditlog.mfs) was developed by Ceridian and delivered as object code only. We do have one of our own custom MFS's that we are using, and I have the code for that, so it's not a big deal. But without auditlog.mfs, this won't be workable I'm afraid.
Still, I'm going to play around with it for a bit.

Matt,
You could try to copy the object code for the MFS programs into OI and see if that works. Once upon a time, non-GUI logic that was compiled in AREV would work just fine in OI. I don't think this has changed.

Thanks for the idea, Don.
I'll definitely give that a try. Now, it does call StatUp or some other function to display messages in the status bar of the window. Hopefully that won't cause a problem.

Matt,
Most likely you'll get a SYS1000 error if it can't find the object code that it wants to call. If that happens but the routine is not essential to the MFS, then simply create your own version of that routine in OI. It can be an empty shell of a routine but it will avoid the SYS1000 error.

HR-1 has a number of modifications to ARev itself - mostly related to security that are deeper down than just the MFSes. If you did a simple binary comparison of the SYSOBJ records between comparable versions of HR-1 vs ARev you'll find that the object code is different in many of the programs. So even if the MFS object code will run as is under OI/ARev32 the hooks in RList or whatever may not be there and the MFS might work in an unexpected manner.
Plus there are a number of utilites that are used by many of the batch processes that you will not have source code for.

This is something we've been playing with. I'll have one of my people call you (assuming you're still on the same number).

There is no guarantee we are going to go this route; it's just something I'm playing with for now.

OK, my interest is piqued now. What's up with the three dead trolls in a baggie? I ask because I've recently come up with a calendar/bird bath using several Towers of Hanoi games played by trolls sitting in a circle. It accurately predicts the spring equinox to within a couple hours for several centuries.
Anyone wanting particulars can email me off-list at brillig at gmail dot com. I even have an Arev program you can use to view the various configurations.

Quite hilarious.
Some of there stuff is on a par with They Might Be Giants in terms of just plain silliness.
I believe some of their work is on MP3.com.
