How to get current field value for pre-read processing (OpenInsight Specific)

I need to perform validation routine on the key field in my input form. I have inserted event code in the read event but have been unable to figure out how to retrieve the value just entered in the key field.
I have tried: Get_Property(@window, "EQUIP_NO"), Equip_No being the edit line id, but nothing is retrieved. Also tried using @ID with the same result. I need to retrieve this value and some cases modify it and return it as the key to be used to read the record.
It seem fairly straight forward, but I am stuck……Any help would be appreciated..

Bill,
You are using the fully defined control name .. yes?
IF NOT(YES) THEN
the format of get property is
rtn get_property(ctrlname,property)
where ctrlname is the full name starting with the window nameinstance followed by '.' followed by the control name.
So a window called "INV_ENTRY" and a control named "DESC" would give the control the full name of INV_ENTRY.DESC. Note: if you have checked multiple instance in the window properties then you might have something like INV_ENTRY*3.DESC. Also note you can use @WINDOW for your window name.
The properties are listed in the help but 'TEXT' is used for editlines. Look in Sysprocs,Ctrl_Property_Equates for all the good names.
So .. data=get_property(@Window:".DESC","TEXT") will get the data.
