First - thanks for the answers on my other questions - that helped clear things up a lot.

One other concern we are wrestling with at this point is: Currently in ARev we have the ability write some code to go through a file and let's say 'backfill' a new field. If we've deployed our OI application as a runtime application - can we write a program in the development copy, and run it against the production data in the runtime environment? Or, would we have to deploy the program and run it from within the runtime environment?

Thanks again,

Jeff

It's really straight forward:

Assuming you have your development copy on the same network, you could just attach the table you want in the development copy, write your program, run it and then detach the table.

Just make sure the Runtime and Development copy use the same network type.

Is there any concern about index updates, etc. - I know (think) in ARev it was not recommended to access the same tables from two different executables. Is that not an issue in OI?

Not AFAIK. I've done it quite a few times with no problems (as long as the same kind of networking is enabled for both runtime and development) .

If the new field is indexed, just issue an update_index(tablename , , ) in the development OI to update the new index before detaching the table.

I believe this is only an issue if you are using the same OpenEngine serial number in each executable. Like Dave, I too will often work on the production data from within the development directory of OI while the rest of the office is working on the same data with the within the runtime directory.

If memory serves, you only had problems with multiple executables accessing the same files when working with the byte range drivers. Most locks were placed in REVBOOT so they would not be transfered across. There was not a problem when running Novell. There is not a problem with the NPP.

Same serial numbers are a completely different issue and there are checks in there to try and eliminate fraudulant usage.
