We are currently running Arev 2.12 with 28 users over Novell Netware 3.12(maxed out at 25 users) with NLM 1.5. We are replacing the file server and are trying to decide whether to use Novell or NT - is one significantly better at handling dos applications and printing such as AREV than the other?

We also have a remote site currently coming in over CISCO routers with PCAnywhere. I want our decision to maximize the performance of these PCs. We have a big problem right now with print jobs freezing up the remote terminals.

Also, I have been slowly replacing our win 3.1 machines with windows 98 and have not been satisfied with the way it runs arev. I heard somewhere that NT Workstation is better for dos apps than windows 98.

How feasable is it to keep running Arev 2.12 with all the technology going to windows apps? I was hoping that the rewrite to Open Insight would happen in someone elses lifetime….

Well based on my experience (others may differ),I would stay with Netware 3.12 with AREV DOS. Principle reason – performance and reliability. If your PCs are going to be WIN98, you MUST get the NLM to protect yourself against GFE. Plus, again you'll see some performance gain.

Switch to NT with your OI app. That's what we plan to do.

If you're concerned with performance, stay with Novell. Just remember that support for Netware 3.12 will be discontinued on October 31, this year…

Concerning the OS choice for your workstations, I can only tell you that the big difference between Win98 and WinNT is stability (not only for running ARev).

Thanks for the input!

It appears from my discussions that it's best to stick with Novell.

Is there any advantage or problems (arev compatability wise) with the various versions since our 3.12?
