If use OpenEngine to drop to the debugger. OI is stuck in RTP57 after being called from REV_BGND_UPDATE.
This (needless to say) is worse than the problem I am having with OI not exiting memory.
Any ideas anyone?

What is OI doing in REV_BGND_UPDATE when it calls RTP57 that would cause it to sometimes hang?

I though this might have something to do with DEP or UAC but the setting for either one makes no difference.

Vista has two ways to set run as Admin on a shortcut. One on the compatibility tab (which is inoperable when UAC is off) and one from the Advanced button on the shortcut tab (this should work with UAC off).
Do we have anyone successfully running OI with UAC on?

When I originally got the machine, I used it with the UAC for about a week before it annoyed me enough to turn it off. There were no problems, other than the pesky message.
All the security settins are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System so you might want to look into making some changes in there.

We are working on these issues, but what we are seeing is not as cut and dry as what you see. Speaking to the instances of Oinsight.exe left in the task manager:
Are you running as a user, Administrator or user with Admin privileges?
Does every instance of OI you open locally stay open in the Task Manager after you close OI?
Can you consistantly and reproducibly get instances to stay open?
Do the instances of Oinsight.exe in the task manager take up the total user count of your OI? e.g. four phantom users on a four user system will not let you open a fifth instance of OI.
Are you opening OI exclusively from a shortcut or from Windows Explorer when you see this?
Are you closing OI from OI or from the Windows Tool Tray (and closing a whole group of OIs at a time)?
Do you have multiple copies of OI on the same machine with the same serial number?
This copy of OI is run locally, and not on the network with Vista as a client?
This is only with OI 8.0 or are you seeing it with 7.2.1 as well?
Let's start there. Anyone else with Vista can chime in as well.

Curiously enough, I also see that the instances of Oinsight.exe that remain in the task manager do not count against the user count. From a quick examination of the Internet, there is nothing known about phantom processes in Vista, but who knows. That's was SysInternals tools are for.

That is, with multi- user engine, run locally, launched from shortcut found that could launch new sessions upto user count (so far OK). However every session that I closed left a persistent Oinsight.exe task (or part thereof) running in task manager consuming about 5,800K.
The persistent task (or remnant) seemed to make no difference to user count etc, so could re-launch to max user count etc, just the task didnt tidy up completely.
I hadnt noticed this behaviour as it hadnt caused any grief thusfar. Applies to v8 and earlier versions. Also if I bring up formes designer, this executable also remains as remnant in Task manager - needs to be forecably terminated.

General Note: Had set DEP to essentual system files only (the Opt-in setting I guess).
Observation: OI itself runs fine on Vista Business / Ultimate. However legacy applications / customised systems may try to make use of 16bit code etc - need to work thru that process. Elsewhere there has been requests to document base or core dll / components of OI for major versions - some effort along these lines might be helpful in sorting out stability issues such as this.

With the Logitech software removed from the startup folder I seem to be able to run OI with no startup issues (locking up when loading) with UAC both on and off. I did see a few problems last night (OI still locked up when starting); but cannot seem to get it to lock up right now. If I load the Logitech software in locks up every time.
However in both cases oinsight.exe still sticks in memory.
I fresh install exhibits the same behavior as my upgraded install. It locks up on loading with the Logitech software running and oinsight.exe sticks in memory.
No other program has exhibited any problems with the Logitech software running. This is the version of the Logitech software I am using:

Hope this helps.

c:\temp is my temp directory (set temp and set tmp).
The above file contains only one piece of readable text "ROOT ENTRY".
Each character is two bytes the second byte is 00.

I've found a few things that seem to indicate these are VB temp files. Is your app doing anything that might trigger a VB app to load?

The files are created by launching OI, none of my stuff needs to run.
Even the fresh install creates these files.
The file is created by going to a DOS prompt running oinsight.exe, and opening SYSPROG.

What's your spyware software? Because if you're not making any changes, then this is sounding like some form of adaptive software.

However it was doing this a couple of weeks ago when all had installed was the Windows firewall.
I am not making any changes as you say but sometimes OI will launch and sometimes not. Somethings seem to make it happen less often, like removing the Logitech software, setting UAC off, running in with Admin priv (set from shortcut) etc…
When it locks up OI is repeatedly reading from the following files and always the same files. So what might cause OI to get locked in an infinite loop reading from these files?

It is the !SYSREPOSLOCKS file. It could be corrupted. I'd clear it and rebuild the index. The only field indexed is APPUSERSTATUS.
The REVLOCKS file is the file the LH driver records the locks against.

Jim,
Reviewing OI v8 on Vista - using both my master system and the downloadable Eval system I realised the key diference between the Eval system (which exited nicely when closed down; no stuck residual in memory) and my master system was driver: change driver on Eval to UD 3 and problem problem appeared.
Aslo I noted that with the UD system the Process Explorer showed
a) attempts to open a REVPARAM file in the Revboot folder, then progressing up the path to drive root, trying to open the REVPARAM at each level. Yeah, know that is ment to happen, but tend to forget if using a single user system! Conclusion: Make sure you have a REVPARAM file if using UD. It will work without, but less efficiently.
b) With UD driver, when OI closed down, a thread is spawned to open hhctrl.ocx (this is a microsoft help file in Windows\System32\ folder I believe). I suspect that this is a product of a faulty exit procedure. So part of the Oinsight.exe session plus this thread is left in memory.
Perhaps Rev staff could comment?

I am using "All networks driver 2.1"; so I don't think that the network driver is the problem (or at least not part of the problems I am seeing). I see two problems (1) OI will not consistently load into memory (2) oinsight.exe always sticks in memory when OI Is closed.
With regard to the loading of OI problem that I am seeing two programs seem to increase the frequency of the problem. If either of the following is loaded the likelihood of OI locking up when loading is dramatically increased.
(1) Logitech drivers
(2) Katmouse http://www.code-scout.net/katmouse/
Both are using the mouse. Could this be something OI is doing on startup that is mouse related?

Richard,
I tried to duplicate your setup and did not get the same results. I also am able to get the Oinsight.exe to stay behind with the 2.1 Service. Lastly, whether running local, with a service, or across the LAN, I never saw the hhctrl.ocx appear.
Still looking for common causes.
