A modern printer no longer prints from a tray number, rather they choose a tray given the paper size and paper type (BOND, LETTERHEAD, COLOR, PLAIN) parameters. The printer itself lets you define those parameters. You can see these parameters in the printer properties.

So, does/can OIPI use a "PAPERTYPE" parameter?

We've had to create different printers on the workstation that are hardset to each individual tray. Then we pass that printer into the OIPI device/port setting.
