Has any one tried to run OI on Linux using WINE. I had a small try the other day but it did not seem to work.

Hi Kevin,

I last checked about a year ago. I tried using a product call CrossOver from CodeWeavers ( who employ most of the WINE developers ) without much luck. At that time their documentation stated that WINE derives from the Windows 98 code base, not WinNt. It may be time to try again. For now, I recommend looking at VMWare or a product like 2x as a way of serving OI to Linux desktops.

Thanks Bob

I assume that VMWare provides virtual computers that can then run various operating systems rather than negating the need for windows. Would this be correct.

Thanks Kevin

Correct.

With VMWare you would host one or more virtual windows machines inside another Windows or Linux machine. It is popular for increasing server utilisation on web farms, where they can host many barely utilised virtual machines on a single blade server, giving them lower resource costs. VmWare introduces the concept of an 'Appliance', a virtual machine optimised for a single purpose. Purchasers just plop in the image, set the licence count and away they go. I am proposing a sort of OI appliance, where you would pre-configure a Windows 2003 /2x application server, then serve the OI application to desktops. This does not save on Windows licensing fees, but can lead to an appealing total cost of ownership, and free you for worrying about what your customers run on the desktop. Printing is usually the weak spot in this scheme, since you cannot avoid knowing about the user's printers.
