Does anyone know if there is a problem with OI files if OI is running and a tape backup program is backing up. The drive is an ART tape drive and the backup prog is seagate backup exec…appears it does not have a problem with open files.

BUT I seem to remeber years back something about .OV file in arev being recreated if a backup prog was backing it up.

Barry,

Many backup programs will put a lock on the file while it is backing up. During this time AREV/OI will think that the file does not exist in the system. Since OV files are sometimes lost (for instance, someone does a straight DOS COPY command which doesn't copy 0 byte length files) AREV/OI will just recreate them when that particular file gets accessed by the application. Consequently, if the backup software is currently backing up a large OV file and AREV/OI is trying to access this file it will assume that it needs to recreate it…which will be a new 0 byte length file…effectively losing and corrupting the whole file.

Often this occurs with indexes since background indexing will routinely access index tables.
