Installing Optional Modules

If you try to install a 2.01 optional module (ASCII or dBASE) onto an Advanced Revelation system version 2.02 or higher, an error message similar to this appears:

The system is currently at level 2.02. You need to be at least at level 2.01 to perform the install.

If you continue, a second warning similar to the first appears and installation is cancelled.

The goal is to prevent you from installing a bond that may not work properly under the current version of the product. For example, assume that Bond XYZ was developed under version 2.0 and takes advantage of features in that version. In version 2.01 changes are made to the Advanced Revelation system and the Bond is also updated. Both sets of changes are distributed on the Maintenance Disk.

By installing the Maintenance Release you automatically update both the base produce and any bonds that are installed.

Now imagine what could happen if you installed the old version of Bond XYZ. Features it relied upon are no longer in the base product. You cannot be sure that the Bond will work as intended.

There are circumstances, however, when you may find it necessary to install a bond after you have already applied one or more maintenance releases. The following steps explain how to do this:

  1. Insert the optional module disk into drive A.
  2. From TCL, enter:
    EDIT DOS A:\LOG
  3. With the record on the screen, put the cursor on line 1 and press [Ctrl-E].
  4. Cursor to row 6 in the sub-window. The value here should be "2.01". Change it to "2.0".
  5. Press [F9] to save your change. Press [Esc] to leave the sub-window, then press [F9] and [Esc] to save and exit the log record.
  6. At this point you can install the optional module.
  7. Because you have installed the bonds after the latest update, you will have to run the update again to make sure the bonds get updated.
