Hello;
I have a client who is running into many difficulties using an AREV 1.X application on their Novell Network. The application in question is very heavy on the system and there are up to 40 users. Some files are huge reaching hundreds of megs. A function can rarely be run without running into a read error or GFE. The network is using file mirorring.
My question is; does there exist a product such as the NLM for AREV 1.x products? If not, do you have any suggestions that might help the system run better?
Thank you

I'll chime in with my $.02 . . .
As you've already determined, the NLM would be a very good idea - except it requires ARev 2.03 or higher. With the size of the application you've described, I would really consider upgrading if possible. I'm not sure about all the details involved going from 1.x to 2.x - but I would think in the long run it would pay off. Especially if you have some Win95 workstations. Since we've installed the NLM on our system GFE's have all but disappeared. We ran 2.12 for years, up until recently when we upgraded to 3.12 for OI purposes.
I wouldn't know what else to suggest unless you have specific questions about a particular type of workstation setup or something like that.

Perhaps the file mirroring software is causing the GFE's. I once heard of this happening. Once DOS files size to above a couple of megs, DOS gets slow at resizing and writing these files. Network traffic must be huge.
(a) you could try 100 mbit network cards, and a high-powered file server. this would increase bandwidth at the hardware level.
(b) you could try attaching a local copy of the following files: lists, verbs, popups, templates, your code library files, any static data files. This would reduce network load, albeit marginally.
© try migrating your application to AREV 2.12/3.12, just for
better stability and the chance to use XMS/Win95 safely, etc.
(d) consider archiving your data from the biggest files into smaller chunks. Selects will be faster, reports faster, and perhaps handling easier.
Hope this helps,
Steve
What is OI? I appologize for my ignorance. I am only an Arev. user.
I am wondering if OI stands for Off Invoice or is it a technical term use for programming?
OpenInsight (OI) - the Windows version of AREV.
