I have a customer that is experiencing a problem with OI locking up. This has just surfaced and appears to occur after the record associated with a form is written and OI is trying to return to a idle state.
ENVIRONMENT: Windows XP PRO, Novell 4.15, Novell client 4.83 LH NLM 1.5
Revparam is set to serveronly=1, flushfilesizeupdates=1, flushallupdates
runtime OI 6 users, netdrv=netware NLM multi-user driver VER.1.5c
A record is saved, seems to be complete, OI runs at close to 98% cpu, the screen flickers some, network traffic sent and received climbs. In order to use OI again the task manager must be invoked and OI killed.
Problem began yesterday while saving an invoice. Rewriting the invoice and saving it again worked fine. Today it is in another area but now when trying to repeat the operation it fails consistantly. Problem is only occuring at one location, many other users are not seeing the problem. They are on different networks, same software. Customer claims, and I believe him , that he has done nothing to system. Problem occurs on different workstations of different types. All are the same OS.
No gfe's found on the files in questions. Trying to rebuild indexes on the files in questions fails with same type of error. No error messages appearing that we can see.
No software changes. I am suspicious of resource management on server. I am not familiar with Novell and neither is the customer.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Check the available space on the Novell volumes.
More importantly do a PURGE /ALL on the volumes. This type of behavior is typical when there are a large number of the deleted file entries in the Novell directories. I do this monthly on the Novell systems I support. This is critical if the temporary sort files are going to the network drives. You set the Purge Immediately property on a specific directory to prevent this.
Warren, Your advice seems to have hit the nail on the head. The customer's urge deleted over 125,000 files…. says as far as he knows it has never been done. He will now be doing it on a monthly schedule.
Thank you. You may want to email me if you are interested in picking up any work. We have a few customers using Rev/OI on Novell servers and the experienced people are fewer and further between. sbotes@retailware.net
