Has anyone used Arev on a DOS PC with the data files on an NT 4.0 server. A customers system is currently running on a Netware server, which is being replaced over the next few days, and many of the PC's on the site are only 486's, so are running DOS using NETX.

It would be easier in the short term if we did not have to install WFW, especially since it's very difficult to get new Win3.1 licenses.

Tim, possibilities for AREV with NT server,

Windows 95 will run in 16 mB RAM on a 486 workstation. The protocol would be TCP/IP. I've heard of NETBEUI used successfully also in this setting.

A motherboard upgrade may not be possible without also upgrading the power supply / case, and then RAM too.

I think that sooner or later the client will have to relinquish the 1993 technology.

16 bit TCP stacks are often memory hungry under 640 kB, making a solution a juggling act.

Personnally, I wouldn't touch WFW with a 10-foot pole. Win-95 will offer such a slow performance platform that you will have constant support calls with lock-up's, etc. TCP/IP will eat right into conventional memory for MS-DOS programs and there's no really good strategy to optimize the platform. You are likely to run into conflicts with EMS, so the whole app will probably have to run in conventional memory. If your REVMEDIA contains very many files, you will start to lose file-handles if you ever swap–Not a pretty sight.

Looks like they ought to buy into some modern technology if they want to use NT (or even the latest versions of Netware). The old NETX DOS clients, rather than VLM technology will not make it. Win-95/98 won't run on it at all. In fact, I had a clown try to install Win95 (first release) on a crapped-up 386-SX and tried to call me. Bye Bye butterfly.

You can install the DOS NT client. See the NT documentation on how to do this.

Talking about 1993 technology, you might want to warn your customer that their 486 pcs may not be Y2K compliant. There are programs available, such as one of the Norton's utilities, that will check the 486 hardware to determine if the hardware is Y2K compliant.

If they are changing to NT server, they may want to consider purchasing new PCs or upgrading their PCs.
