I have a current client that has an AREV3.12 system (no dots in table/field names).

They have a possible future requirement to be able to access/update the AREV db from a hand held running MsMobile OS 5.

How much if this senario is possible.

What needs to be done to make it possible.

What are the 'screens' on the handheld written in.

Would this be no different to accessing via pcs over the internet using oicgi.

1) using OI to make the connection, the user could use a browser on the pda

2) Oh my ipaq i did make a quick connection to my CTO (Character TO OI). I believe that Arev32 is using the same technology for the OEServer (also oecgi2). If this is the case then you could do the same with Arev32 (which is really OI with more options)

To be sure i wasn't blowing smoke .. i re-loaded zterm on my ipaq and connected to my CTO server running telnet. Worked .. so don't see any reason why it wouldn't work against arev data.

Barry,

DSig has given you two viable options. However, the Telnet option might be problematic if the devices easily lose connection with the network. We have a client who was using wireless barcode readers that did this. The Telnet service kept crashing. It seemed to be the result of too many engines left as orphans.

I would also recommend contacting VSI Technologies. They have done a fair amount of work in this area. They revealed a new product at the Revelation Conference in Seattle related to this very issue.

There's also the option of using an http type interface and running the application through a browser on the device. That allows for data entry to stay on the local screen until the link is up and it can be transmitted.

That is a great response. Even though the major is wanting to know what stock is in vans, and the oicgi is an expensive path to go, the data could be uploaded/downloaded to a server via http. On the arev end, it can trigger an 'update' when ever the data changes.

Cool…(now i will just cut and paste this….)

That's pretty much what we use it for. Our major system using this was originally an IE4 app on a pocket PC, but we've upgraded it over the years to a tablet PC. The tablet uses OI, and then we have an MFS type layer where reads come from either the local disk or are translated into a http message through S/Web.

The back end is in ARev.
