Dear Revelation

Several things on the planned 8.1 release of OpenInsight.

There are many stories and thoughts abounding on this.

Can we please have a statement.

1. Can a pre-release version of the Users Licence Agreement be made available so that we can review. Especially if there are to be different versions for different countries.

2. Please can you clarify the situation regarding the existing users of OpenInsight who have existing licence agreements in place, and how this is to be affected by the introduction of 8.1.

3. Please can you clarify the situation regarding what happens if a user chooses not to continue with the 20% annual service agreement, and any behavioural changes to the software when the time expires, and indeed the legality of such under the licence agreements.

4. Does the 20% annual service agreement charge, start at day 1, or after the first year.

5. Will there be facilities in place to automatically update the clients licences (eg via an Internet function) or does the software supplier need to upgrade each licence individually.

Please advise the logistics of the licence upgrade task.

I am sure many discussions are to be had, and that the Las Vegas conference will clarify a lot, but for those that wont be attending, we need to prepare now for this to ensure we are not overwhelmed with administration overhead, and to begin including allowances for costs in quotations etc.

Thanks

I second that. Please clarify. I also have network customer that dont do development and they just run our apps. They wont want to pay something annually which they wont use.So, can they dont upgrade? What will happen. Please inform in advance so we are well prepared for it.Dont want it to be a tsunami to hit us.

William, as far as I understand, the users dont have to upgrade, but not sure if Revelation quite understand what this means. It means that as a software product developer, we need to maintain two separate versions of each of our applications, one for the users who do want to upgrade, and one for those that dont. This more than doubles the effort involved in looking after a product.

Bummer. More work for us.

What about bug fixes? Will it be available for those that do not upgrade? Will revelation prepare 2 upgrade set then?

I have no idea, I suspect not, as they too have to maintain two versions, as we do. I am hoping that they will clarify things as its a bit worrying I think. I just wonder how many users this will cause to move elsewhere.

Colin- (and William)

We've copied the original posting into the Licensing and Deployment section of the website (it makes more sense there than here in the Works section). It can be found here: http://www.revelation.com/Licensing.nsf/f12696d31000b22a8525652b00831bb2/d2055a590d494e578525740b0048d056?OpenDocument

We'll start to resond there.

Thanks-

I've posted a question on the licencing forum but have had no answer yet. Maybe no one's looking there.
