Peer-to-peer networks are those in which there is no dedicated file server. That is, every node can both provide and use network resources. Because of the increased interest in this type of network, Revelation Technologies has tested Advanced Revelation 2.11 on three of the popular low-cost peer-to-peer networks. They are Netware Lite 1.0 from Novell, LANtastic 4.0 from Artisoft, and GV LAN OS 1.4h from Grapevine LAN Products.

The networks were tested only to determine if there was any file corruption or other problems associated with Advanced Revelation. No performance testing was done. For all tests the Advanced Revelation Network Cache was set to 20k.

All three networks completed all tests without error. General recommendations for using each network with Advanced Revelation 2.11 are provided below.

Note: For all the networks covered here, you should use the Advanced Revelation "Generic" DOS 3.1+ network driver.

For any station that will share files, you must run SHARE.EXE before SERVER.EXE.

The Station Id in Advanced Revelation is the Netware Login Id. This means that your Station Id may not be unique if the same Login Id is used on multiple machines. Advanced Revelation 2.11 has a sequential session counter as part of the Station Id, ensuring locking between two machines that have the same Netware Login Id.

All machines that share files must MAP a network drive letter to the physical drive to get locking in Advanced Revelation for that drive.

You must run SHARE.EXE on any machine that shares files.

Only machines that run SERVER.EXE can share printers. You must execute this command before sending print jobs from Advanced Revelation:

NET USE port \\servername printername

If you don't execute the command, LANtastic assumes you are using a local printer.

If you are sharing the printer connected to your machine all of your print jobs will be sent to the QUEUE. If you want your printer to act as a local printer you must STOP the queue.

The Advanced Revelation Station Id will be the Machine Name given by LANtastic. On all machines that share files you must use this command to cause Advance Revelatlion to recognize the drive as a shared drive:

NET USE drive_letter \\servername\shared_drive

The Station Id will be the Machine Name defined at installation. You should define GrapeVine's Menu Hot Key as one that is not used in Advanced Revelation, for example, the [SysRq] key.

You must Select the printer from the Select Device menu before sending any print jobs from Advanced Revelation.

For machines that share files you must define the local drive as a network drive from the Define Drives menu.
