Novell networks require a program called NET, which provides the software interrupt interface to the network. NET is typically tied to a specific version of DOS and is identified by the major release number of the DOS for which it intended. For example, the version of NET used with all versions of DOS 3.x is NET3.
Novell recently released a version of NET called NETX that is DOS-version independent. NETX can be used with any version of DOS (3.0 and higher) and, therefore, makes the network administrator's job easier. However, problems have been reported using NETX with Advanced Revelation. Specifically, some versions of NETX do not generate a valid station identifier. This leads to problems for Advanced Revelation processes that rely on a station ID. Those processes include:
- Locking
- Temporary file creation for sorting, RLIST, the PostScript printer driver, and transaction control
Failure to get a good station identifier can lead to Group Format Errors, corrupted reports, corrupted indexes, and coruupted transaction control. The problem has been traced to NETX version 3.2. The problem appears to have been resolved by NETX version 3.22
We recommend that all NETX users update to version 3.22 immediately
To determine which version of NETX you are using enter this command from the DOS prompt:
NETX I
If you are not using version 3.22, have your network administrator upgrade your version as soon as possible. The correct version of NETX can be downloaded from the Novell forum on CompuServe.
